La muestra La atracción del abismo: vanguardia canaria del siglo XXI es una invitación a conocer las tendencias vanguardistas que fueron adoptando una serie de cineastas canarios a lo largo de la primera década del siglo XXI. Es la historia menos conocida de esos años, en los que resuenan los ecos del surrealismo y los nuevos cines de los 60, donde irrumpe de pronto la libertad de la imagen digital, que poco a poco va derivando en un cine de la observación que sustrae la narrativa, destierra el conflicto y superpone los espacios al sujeto. Es también la crónica de un choque entre el reducido espacio isleño y la amplitud de las grandes urbes occidentales, desde Nueva York a Berlín, o desde Buenos Aires a Madrid. Una sucesión de experimentos en el límite de lo cinematográfico, de búsquedas, de callejones a veces sin salida, y también de estimulantes conquistas hacia la modernidad. – Jairo López

The showcase ‘The lure of the abyss: the XXI century Canarian Avantgarde’ is an invitation to get to know the vanguard tendencies adopted by a series of filmmakers from the Canary Islands during the first decade of the XXI century. It is the lesser-known history of those years, which resonates with the echoes of surrealism and the new cinema from the 60s, a decade when the liberty of the digital image suddenly bursts and slowly derives from an observational cinema that abolishes the conflict and favours space against the subject. It is also the story of a clash between the reduced islander space and the wideness of the big occidental cities, from New York to Berlin or from Buenos Aires to Madrid. It is a succession of experiments at the limit of the cinematic, of quests, sometimes of dead ends, but also stimulating wins towards modernity. – Jairo López

En el Berlín actual nos acercamos a las vidas de tres personajes que aún siendo totalmente distintas, tienen en común el hastío y la rutina. Un día estas vidas confluyen para realizar el único acto que parece que les alejará de su monotonía. Tras este hecho “extraordinario” sus vidas vuelven a caminar sobre la rutina.
Berlin. We see the lives of three characters, discovering that although they are completely different, they also share the boredom and routine of everyday life (supermarkets, traffic…). One day, these lives come together for the only action that seems to be able to move them away from their monotony. After this extraordinary event, their lives become routine again.
