SHIPWRECK / NAUFRAGIO

El 3 de octubre de 2013, un barco que transportaba a 500 refugiados eritreos se hundió frente a las costas de la isla italiana de Lampedusa. Más de 360 personas se ahogaron. Abraham, uno de los sobrevivientes, camina a través de un cementerio de barcos hundidos y recuerda vívidamente la experiencia de aquella pesadilla. Mientras, el caos irrumpe en el puerto, cientos de ataúdes están siendo cargados en un buque militar.

On three October 2013, a boat carrying 500 Eritrean refugees sunk off the coast of the Italian island Lampedusa. More than 360 people drowned. Abraham, one of the survivors, walks through a graveyard of shipwrecks and vividly remembers the nightmarish experience. Meanwhile, chaos breaks loose at the harbour, whilst hundreds of coffins are being loaded onto a military ship.

Durante el verano, Ivana trabaja para una agencia que alquila departamentos a extranjeros. Su tarea es simple: recibir inquilinos, traducir de inglés a español y cambiar dólares por pesos. Ivana, sin embargo, es compleja, y toda esa red de traducciones e intercambios termina construyendo un mundo en el que la realidad y la ficción, los pesos y los dólares, los amantes y los amores se vuelven indistintos.

During the summer, Ivana works for an agency that rents apartments to foreigners. Her task is simple: to welcome tenants, translating the Spanish language to English, and changing dollars for pesos. Ivana, however, is complex, and all that web of translations and exchanges ends up building a world in which reality and fiction, pesos and dollars, lovers and loves become indistinct.

“Superjednostka” (Super unidad) es un enorme bloque de pisos diseñado como una “máquina de vivienda”. Hasta tres mil personas pueden vivir en 15 plantas del edificio. Los ascensores sólo se detie- nen cada tres plantas, así que los residentes deben pasar por un laberinto de pasillos y escaleras con el fin de llegar a sus viviendas.

‘Superjednostka’ is a huge block of flats designed as a ‘housing machine’. Up to three thousand people can live on 15 floors of the building. The lifts only stop every three floors so the residents must go through a maze of corridors and stairs in order to get to their flats.

THE MAD HALF HOUR

Una vez por día, los gatos domésticos se vuelven completamente locos. Un brote total de energía. Todo se acaba en media hora. Nadie sabe por qué. Simplemente eso es lo que ocurre. Juan es bastante parecido. No sabe por qué, simplemente se apodera de él. La pérdida de compromiso. ¿Por qué molestarse en pegarle a la pelota sobre la red y esperar a que vuelva, asegurándose de que permanezca dentro de la línea blanca? ¿Todavía ama a Pedro, no, tal vez sí? Pedro está acostumbrado y lo acompaña de la mano. Los dos se aventuran en la noche y vagabundean, como gatos, por las calles de Buenos Aires. Lejos de perseguir la lógica narrativa, la película sigue los sentimientos humanos sin renunciar del todo a los hilos de la historia.

Once a day, domestic cats go completely mad. A total burst of energy. That is all over within half an hour. No one knows why. That’s just how it is. Juan is rather similar. He doesn’t know why, it just seizes him. The loss of commitment. Why should he bother to hit a ball over the net and wait for it to be returned, while making sure it stays within the white line? Does he still love Pedro, no, perhaps yes? Pedro is used to it and takes him by the hand. They venture into the night together and stray, like cats, through the streets of Buenos Aires. Far more than pursuing narrative logic, the film follows human feelings without ever fully relinquishing the threads of the storyline.

Valter esconde un secreto que le impide integrarse en su comunidad. Pasa los días criando cerdos y cantando en el coro de la iglesia, pero ninguna de estas dos actividades consigue mitigar su soledad.

Valter, a resident in a small town, hides a secret that prevents him from integrating with his community. The days pass and he breeds pigs and sings in the church choir but neither of these two activities serve to alleviate his loneliness.

El personal de una escuela provincial está a la espera de la delegación oficial del Ministerio, que tiene que llevar una nueva campana para la escuela. Pero eso no es lo que la escuela quisiera. Lo que realmente necesita son alumnos. El director se esfuerza a enmascarar la falta de alumnado y evitar un cierre inevitable.

A distant provincial school is waiting for an official delegation from the Ministry. They’re about to bring a new school bell. This is not what the school needs though. Having shrunk throughout the years, it lacks two pupils to satisfy the governmental quota established for any school in the country to exist. Anticipating the arrival of the delegation, the principal makes his best to mask the lack of pupils and avoid the unavoidable school closure.
